Yasmin Levy - La Juderia (2005) Yasmin Levy Yasmin Levy is the exciting new voice of ancient Ladino music from Andalucia. Her singing, which comes from somewhere between the bottom of her heart and the aching interior of her guts, is a crossover between Ladino and flamenco styles. The vibrations of Moorish-Arab music are tangible in every trill, as are theunrestrained lamentations of cante jondo. But it is Jewishness that gives La Juderia its instinctive, visceral drive. Levy's ballads and lyrical love songs are sourced from a deep well of history and tradition and a collective memory of searching, wandering, exiles and trials. Her gift is to render this world accessible without forsaking itsdistinctive character and crises. If there are female flamenco vocalists who can match Levy for range and control and there are few of those none come close to her forunbridled energy. Kekele - Congo Life (2003) Kekele I do not entirely agree that with the following excerpt froma review, however the band is certainly interesting. "...Delicious melodies, inspired and original arrangements, faultless and non-indulgent playing, scalp-tingling voices are more than enough for this reviewer, at least, to reaffirm his long-held suspicion that the best African music and the best Congolese music are one and the same thing.."(from: bbc) |

Emmanuel Jal - Ceasefire (2005) Emmanuel Jal Genre-straddling African Christian gospel rapper Emmanuel Jal was born in the village of Tong (sometimes spelled Tony) in southern Sudan around 1980. His mother died when he was still a young child of seven or so, and Jal was forced into a Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) military training camp in Ethiopia, where he was trained to be a soldier, participating in military battles before he was even a teenager. Eventually he left Ethiopia and made the dangerous, grueling journey across Sudan to Waat, which was near his Upper Nile home. From there he was smuggled by his mentor and protector Emma McCune into Nairobi, Kenya. Following McCune's death, Jal became one of the millions displaced by Sudan's violent civil war. McCune's friends and associates saw to it that Jal received an education, and he was able to attend Tala Academy. He began singing around 1998, and was soon active in his local church choir, and formed numerous musical groups, including the Reborn Warriors, his current gospel hip-hop band. He produced a single, "All We Need Is Jesus," and an album, Gua, the title track of which was a number one hit in Kenya. Jal collaborated with Abdel Gadir Salim, a Sudanese Moslem musician, for the album Ceasefire, which was released in 2005, and included a re-recording of "Gua." Since Jal was from the south of Sudan, and Salim was from the north, the collaboration of the two musicians symbolized the kind of unity many have hoped for in the Sudan conflict, and Ceasefire is a major plea for peace and sanity.(from: allmusic.com) MORE AT WIKIPEDIA |

Aster Aweke - Gela Gela (The best?) A native of Gandor, a small town near Lake Tara, Aweke was raised in the capital city of Addis Ababa. The daughter of senior civil servant in the Imperial government, Aweke was determined to become a musician by the age of 13. By her late teens, she was singing in Addis Ababa clubs and hotels with such bands as the Continental Band, Hotel D'Afrique Band, Shebele Band, and the Ibex Band (before they became the internationally known Roha Band). Launching a solo career, Aweke was encouraged by musical entrepreneur Ali Tango, who financed and released five cassettes and two singles of her music. By 1981, Aweke had become disillusioned by Ethiopia's oppressive political climate and relocated to the United States. Temporarily settling in the Bay Area of California with plans to pursue an education; within two years, Aweke continued on to Washington, D.C., the site of the largest Ethiopian population in the U.S. After building a following with her performances in local Ethiopian restaurants, Aweke toured the U.S. and Europe in 1985. I recorded most of it in my own studio and it was mixed by Michael Rozon, Kenny Lyon, Nigel Godrich and Tony Hoffer. I was in a pretty dark phase of my life when I recorded this record. Motel Room and rainy Night are songs about 2 very close friends that died. North Koreatown is a sentimental ode to the halcyon days of my early teenage years. High Life is the story of an aging fashion model. Trona is about my favorite creepy desert town. Xanax is my little post 9-11 song. Late Night Lullaby was written for my little son.
